So it’s been long enough that I really should just go ahead and post some birthday things I have remaining instead of waiting for my video software to cooperate again so I can show you the thrilling adventure we had the day before J-Mar’s 30th birthday. It’s been a month and a half, wow! I won’t keep you waiting any more, I know a lot of people have been asking to see the video posted at the bottom of this entry.
Following our big adrenaline rush (post coming soon), we sped home to our next surprise on Saturday night. I had sweaty palms and a heartbeat outside my chest when I pulled into the parking lot of the Hyundai Hotel. J-Mar looked at me like I was crazy and I told him he had better run inside and get something that was waiting for him in the lobby!
Drum roll… it was Erin and Ryan! Our good friends who hosted us in Geoje at Christmas came up to Ulsan to celebrate with J-Mar. He was seriously surprised! I knew this was going to be one of the highlights of the weekend. When we all lived back in Houston, Erin and I used to joke that Ryan and Jeff are “sort of the same person”. They both enjoy an afternoon with some power tools followed by a hearty meal cooked by their women. 😉 All jokes aside, Erin and Ryan are really great friends of ours and they helped us do this birthday right! Off to chimaek (chicken wings and beer) it was with our adventurous group before turning in for the evening. We had a long day ahead.
The big day finally arrived!
J-Mar was greeted with a scrumptious brunch of his favorite French toast and maple bacon combined with my favorite blood orange mimosas. And, sadly, his last clue. It was accompanied by this awesome shirt I had flown in from ‘Merica (thanks BFFL), which he proudly wore the rest of the day.
He thought he’d be hitting the driving range with Ryan for a bit, which he did, but while they were out Erin helped me frost a bunch of cupcakes for our next big event! J-Mar (I think) had no idea I had arranged a (small) surprise dinner at our favorite Thai restaurant in town. Well, pretty much the only Thai restaurant in town. I did have help, shout out to Jake and EunJin for all your helpful coordination! And yes, I made an e-vite that included a photo of 7-year-old J-Mar.
On top of a lovely family-style meal of cashew chicken and crab curry and other deliciousness, guests enjoyed my signature chocolate and homemade-funfetti cupcakes, which were quite the hit, if I do say so myself. I also organized a game trivia (just what all these engineers need for a little intellectual competition) on the theme of “1984”. Believe it or not 1984 was a very eventful year! Well, other than J-Mar’s birth, of course. Many celebrities were born (LeBron and Mark Zuckerburg), the first iMac was released, Prince topped the charts with “When Doves Cry” and Tetris was invented! The birthday boy’s team, the “Rubik’s Cubes”, were the big winners of the evening.
In all, it was a fantastic party, and I think everybody had a great time. Ryan even managed to wear the same exact color green. Friends and fun don’t get much better than this!
What a week! I could finally relax. All the hard work was behind me. Speaking of, I wanted to share with everybody one of the best gifts J-Mar got all week (this guy is seriously spoiled this year), and probably the one I spent the most time on, planning a couple months in advance. So many of our friends and family are far away and I would have loved to have a big party with everyone, but since that just wasn’t an option, I had to find a way to get all of your birthday wishes to my dear husband.
Thanks to widespread video technology and my constant harassment of our loved ones via email, I was able to get over 30 video messages for the birthday boy. I put them together in a 15 minute production, plus bloopers. To say the least, he was pretty blown away that people from across the world would think of him. I think he was also surprised that I pulled it off without ever saying a word! It’s so hard for me to keep secrets from him. Without further ado:
I made sure he was okay with me posting this photo, but look how cute he is when he’s emotional.
Seriously, you guys, he really misses all of you and couldn’t believe that you all took the time to wish him a happy birthday. Please know how appreciated each and every one of you are; you were a truly special part of the occasion. Thank you!
P.S. My sincere apologies, if, like me, you hate the sound of your voice and did not want it to be on the interwebs for all to hear. Just take comfort in knowing that most people don’t have time to watch a 15 minute video online.
