As we wind into the last hours – ok, at this point it’s minutes – of 2013, I wanted to reflect on what a year it’s been for us.
January saw a weekend away with my mom, where we tasted and bought more than enough wine in Texas hill country. And, though I really hated the idea of going by myself, I took a chance and signed up for my first Pure Barre class in Houston. In less than 6 months, I achieved physical goals I never thought possible and made friends that have been instrumental in keeping me healthy from afar. This was quite possibly the best decision of the year.
February & March
We can barely remember what happened these months, just a lot of waiting for an overseas assignment and crafting/woodworking to keep us busy. I made my first quilt! I won $26 at BYOB bingo! And we went to the horse races for the first time, where I encountered a friendly donkey!
I visited New York City for the very first time, with my sister Ashley playing host. She showed me all the sites, took me to eat fantastic food, and hung out with my college friends Megan and Sara for the day. We had a blast!
Our first hop across an ocean this year was in May. We went to visit my friend Kristine who was studying in Scotland, and attended the wedding of another dear friend in London. We hit the amazing countryside and coast of Ireland, and Jeff got to play a round of golf at St. Andrew’s. Then, my brother Jacob graduated from college with a degree in biomedical engineering, so we went to Chicago to see him walk the stage and celebrate with the whole family. We are all so proud of him!
My grandparents celebrated an amazing and blessed 50 years of marriage, and every single one of my 12 cousins was present to surprise them. It was great to be in Ohio and be with my precious family. Another trip, more great memories! Even better when they are made wearing matching tie-dye t-shirts.
J spent a weekend in Pennsylvania for his Polish family reunion, visiting with extended family and playing with our 1 year old nephew, Evan. He isn’t the picture-taker in the family, but I did get some shots of my July 4th weekend in New Orleans with my family, celebrating my birthday early. Despicable Me 2, beer tasting and pool time with the pups!
J took his first business trip to Ulsan in August and began to see the light at the end of the overseas-assignment tunnel. To recover from the disappointment of a failed assignment to Papua New Guinea, we kicked off a trip to celebrate our first anniversary (September 1) in Cancun with our incredible friends Erin and Eric. We visited the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, ate the most amazing guacamole of all time, and finished our days with dinner by the ocean. It was an unforgettable trip.
My BFFL, Sara C, came to visit us in Houston before we headed off to Asia, and we enjoyed a weekend of beer, s’mores, a soccer game and general shenanigans.
This month, we trekked up to the Texas Renaissance Festival, where we spent the weekend in an RV with our friends Eric and Erin (can you tell we really like them?). There are no pictures to commemorate that activity, but we do have evidence of one of our last weeks in Houston – a Halloween pub crawl with our dear friends Summer and Austin. We went as “Fifty Shades of Gray”.
November just so happened to be a very big month for us. We flew over the Pacific Ocean with our two fur kids and four giant suitcases with the ultimate destination being our new home in Ulsan, South Korea. We spent Thanksgiving with friends in Seoul and started to learn our way around.
Adapting to the expat lifestyle, we explored the joys and pitfalls of living in Korea, and celebrated Christmas in the most American ways we could. We’ve spent the last few days planning our 2014, and the new year looks good from here!
Cheers from our champagne “glasses” (Tupperware containers) on the ocean this evening! Happy New Year!
