Well, after that last somewhat depressing post, I have an interesting follow up announcement! Just when we thought we were done with this:
…it looks like we will be taking our sweet pups to a new apartment. Don’t worry, we are not leaving Korea, but we need to make some changes for a better environment for the dogs. It turns out that there are a lot of people in our building who don’t understand dog ownership the way we do in America, despite the many friends/visitors we have had here who compliment us on how well behaved our pups are. (I only say that because those are hard-earned compliments!!)
The Korean community is very active in voicing opinions of others’ behavior (if you couldn’t tell from my last post), and it doesn’t surprise me that their lack of knowledge about and acceptance of dogs has put us in our current circumstance. In the end, cultural differences combined with communication barriers with our HOA have led us to begin our move to an apartment in a compound with all “foreigners”, primarily “Westerners” – Americans, Canadians, Australians, etc. Though this may change our cultural immersion a little bit, in the end, it will be what’s best for our pups.
The new place is a highly coveted location because of the benefits to foreigners that live there, and though the apartment isn’t as nice as our current place (who can compete with an 8-month old building?), we are making our best efforts to see through rose-colored glasses on this one. I’m taking our first load of stuff over today, and hoping this move is much quicker than the first!
If this is any indication, 2014 certainly won’t be boring.
